Dear Friend of Justice and Peace in the Americas:

In these uncertain times, one of the few abiding certainties our partners in Central America and Colombia have known has been unchecked atrocity:  increased attacks on human rights defenders, the unjust criminalization of land and water defenders, and the ever-escalating militarization of “security” forces that suppress civil liberties.

In Colombia: the alarming rate of assassinations of social leaders continues with more than 84 killed so far this year.

In Guatemala: environmental defenders are routinely harassed, threatened, arrested and criminalized, and killed

In El Salvador: the government is moving away from democracy and toward more authoritarianism: militarized repression, the state surveillance of journalists and dissidents, and political persecution.

In Nicaragua: the government is stifling opposition by cancelling the legal status of human rights groups and media outlets

In Honduras: the military enforced the will of a US company to dig up a 200-year old Indigenous cemetery to advance its gold mining operations

Since 1981, IRTF has been building bridges of solidarity with oppressed communities in Central America and Colombia. IRTF challenges and organizes for change in the policies and practices of US corporations, military, and government. We can take on this necessary work and are able to amplify the voices of grassroots communities thanks to independent funding from individual supporters,  funding that is not tied to large foundations or government.

More than 80% of IRTF’s support comes from individuals like you who care deeply about social, economic, and racial justice. As needs and circumstances change in Central America and Colombia—as well as immigration enforcement policies in the US—this crucial support from individual donors gives us the autonomy to be flexible and stay true to our mission. We need, appreciate, and thank you for your financial support.

P.S. In honor of our four decades of solidarity work, please consider a gift of $40 or more. We’ll put your gift to work right away: in solidarity with marginalized and vulnerable communities in Latin America, at our border, on the streets of Cleveland, and in immigration detention facilities. All people deserve safety, care, and dignity.
