Fifty social leaders were assassinated in Colombia from January this year onwards, the Institute of Studies for Development and Peace (Indepaz) confirmed.

According to the Observatory of Human Rights and Conflicts of Indepaz, Jose Pascual Quevedo, community leader, member of a cooperative organization in the department of Guaviare, was killed yesterday.

Quevedo was murdered in the morning by armed men who called out to him to exit a public establishment where he was conversing with other people, and was shot.

According to an early warning issued by the Ombudsman’s Office in 2018 for the municipalities of Mapiripan and Puerto Concordia, the presidents of Community Action Boards and governors of indigenous reservations are populations at risk.

The resolution of inter-ethnic and intra-community conflicts, the ordering of the territory fall on them, and they are a fundamental piece for the implementation of the Peace Agreements, according to the statement.
