At outreach tables throughout the year, IRTF sells artisan-crafted fair trade items—raising tens of thousands of dollars—so that artisans and farmers in Latin America can earn a living wage. In addition to Equal Exchange brand fair trade coffees, teas, and chocolate, IRTF features handmade jewelry, wallets, handbags, ornaments, and more. Through its fair trade program, IRTF calls on consumers to examine and challenge the corporate-dominant economic model that results in exploitation both at home and abroad. Alternative trade organizations (like those in the fair trade network), in contrast, are setting standards to ensure fair wages and human dignity for producers, community investment, and environmental sustainability.
