WEBINAR: Crisis in Honduras: A post-election update from on-the-ground activists

Watch this webinar to hear from Honduran activists an update on the state of affairs in the weeks after the highly contentious 2021 Presidential Elections. In particular, we learned more about the trial against the eight political prisoners of Guapinol, which started December 9, 2021. The webinar features Juana Zúniga: activist, community leader, and the spouse of one of the political prisoners of Guapinol, and analysis of the elections by Padre Ismael Moreno, of the Jesuit-sponsored media outlet Radio Progreso.

After two years of unjust imprisonment, on Thursday, December 9, the trial against the eight political prisoners of Guapinol continues. Their crime: defending the Guapinol and San Pedro rivers from the Los Pinares mining project. In a case plagued by false accusations against the human rights defenders and corruption on the part of Honduran authorities, on February 9, 2021, the UN determined that the detention of the Guapinol 8 was arbitrary and contrary to their human rights.
The elections of November 28, 2021, became a historic event for Honduras. We see in Xiomara Castro’s electoral victory as another step in the popular resistance that preceded the 2009 coup and the result of the sacrifice of hundreds of murdered, disappeared, or displaced comrades. As we celebrate, we keep in mind the hundreds of thousands of people who, day by day, continue to resist the effects of the neoliberal and criminal model that gave rise to the regime of Juan Orlando Hernandez.
We celebrate and honor the memory of those who preceded us by standing firm in our solidarity with the Honduran people and continue to denounce the crimes committed by the U.S. and Canada-backed neoliberal governments that resulted from the 2009 coup.
The working group, which belongs to the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (UNHCHR), noted that the arbitrary detention of the Guapinol Water Protectors is related to their work in defense of the environment. While the Honduran prosecution has not been able to gather evidence against the 8 Water Protectors, plenty of evidence demonstrates the illegality of the Los Pinares mining project and the links of the government of Juan Orlando Hernandez with organized crime groups.
“The Hernández dictatorship implemented a strategy of criminalization against human right defenders (Guapinol) promoting dispossession projects of natural resources that favored extraction (multinational) companies that obtained mining/energy concessions via acts of corruption” said Edy Tabora, one of the lawyers of the Guapinol Water Defenders.

Tras dos años de injusto encarcelamiento, el jueves 9 de diciembre continuará el juicio contra los ocho presos políticos de Guapinol. Su delito: defender los ríos Guapinol y San Pedro del proyecto minero Los Pinares. En un caso plagado de falsas acusaciones contra los defensores de los derechos humanos y de corrupción por parte de las autoridades hondureñas, el 9 de febrero de 2021, la ONU determinó que la detención de los 8 de Guapinol era arbitraria y contraria a sus derechos humanos.
Las elecciones del 28 de noviembre de 2021 se convirtieron en un acontecimiento histórico para Honduras. Vemos en la victoria de la presidenta electa, Xiomara Castro, un paso más en la resistencia popular que precedió al golpe de Estado de 2009 y el resultado del sacrificio de cientos de compañeros asesinados, desaparecidos o desplazados. Al celebrar, tenemos presente a los cientos de miles de personas que día a día siguen resistiendo los efectos del modelo neoliberal y criminal que dio origen al régimen de Juan Orlando Hernández.
Celebramos y honramos la memoria de quienes nos precedieron manteniéndonos firmes en nuestra solidaridad con el pueblo hondureño y continuamos denunciando los crímenes cometidos por los gobiernos neoliberales apoyados por Estados Unidos y Canadá que resultaron del golpe de Estado de 2009.
El grupo de trabajo, que pertenece al Alto Comisionado de las Naciones Unidas para los Derechos Humanos (ACNUDH), señaló que la detención arbitraria de los Protectores del Agua de Guapinol está relacionada con su trabajo en defensa del medio ambiente. Si bien la fiscalía hondureña no ha podido reunir pruebas contra los 8 Protectores del Agua, muchas evidencias demuestran la ilegalidad del proyecto minero Los Pinares y los vínculos del gobierno de Juan Orlando Hernández con grupos del crimen organizado.
"La dictadura de Hernández implementó una estrategia de criminalización contra los defensores de los derechos humanos (Guapinol) promoviendo proyectos de despojo de los recursos naturales que favorecieron a las empresas extractivas (multinacionales) que obtuvieron concesiones minero-energéticas a través de actos de corrupción" dijo Edy Tabora, uno de los abogados de los Defensores del Agua de Guapinol.
